Portugal v Iceland: Gabriele Marcotti’s betting tip
Iceland are the neutral’s darlings because the mere fact that they’ve made it here is remarkable. Portugal are obviously far more talented and even though we’re not sure what condition Cristiano Ronaldo will be in and whether he’s an added value, they are gifted enough on paper to do well in the tournament. And yet it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll do well in this opening game and, in fact, you could see a bit of caution while the Iceland’s enthusiasm and hype might give them an initial lift. Iceland made a name for themselves by being a tough side to beat during qualifying and if they can get their defensive structure right in this one then they can make things hard for Portugal. That’s why I’d be pushing out the boat and backing Iceland +1 at 6/4.
