This may look like a gilt-edged opportunity for the hosts, with Stuttgart winning none of their last five on the road, but with Union coming off a loss and the visitors coming off the back of an uplifting result, the home win looks a little short at odds of 2.1. Instead, plumping for goals is the way to go. Plenty of goals have gone in at this venue in recent times, with four of Union’s last five home games containing three or more goals. The same can be said for Stuttgart in general, with four of their last five containing at least three goals.

Following pleasing wins in both the league and the DFB Pokal, the semi-final of which they’ve reached for only the second time in their history, Union came unstuck last time out, losing by a goal to nil away against Wolfsburg. A disappointing result, though there was plenty to like about the way in which Urs Fischer’s men fought. They were the more creative and more proactive team in the game, so we shouldn’t overreact to the result.

At home, Saturday’s hosts remain strong. They’ve picked up a solid 24 points at home, averaging two points per 90 minutes in front of their own fans. More impressive is the fact that only two teams have gone to Stadion An der Alten Forsterei and returned with all three points. Those two teams? Bayern Munich and Dortmund, who currently occupy the top two places in the Bundesliga.

For Stuttgart, things improved last weekend, though as usual their game wasn’t without its ups and downs, and started very much with a down, as they found themselves two goals down inside the opening 40 minutes, but Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men stuck to their task, turning the tide by scoring before the break, before going on to complete the turnaround with two second half goals. A big three points won by a side fighting to remain in the division.

Playing on the road is a problem for Saturday’s visitors, who are without a win in five travelling games, four of which they’ve lost, but they really did look up for the fight last time out, and that result should mean that they go to the capital with renewed confidence.

If the big man, who averages 0.65 expected goals and assists combined per 90 minutes, can stay fit, then Stuttgart have an excellent chance of beating the drop.
