Rafa Nadal started his journey with a win over John Isner (6-3, 6-1). Contrary to expectations, this wasn’t the most difficult match for the Spaniard.
Apart from the fact that Isner did not serve dangerously with the first ball (which is his main trump card), it must be admitted that Rafa played brilliantly on the receiving end. Isner took only one game in the second set.

Shapovalov beat Lorenzo Sonego (7-6, 3-6, 6-3) in the first round. The match was a nervous one, Denis at one point had an argument with the referee, then began to react emotionally to the shouts from the stands, who were desperately supporting his opponent.
However, somehow Shapovalov managed to cope with his emotions and overpowered Sonego in the third set.
In the second round, Denis defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-4, 7-6). In this match, Shapovalov showed good tennis, not giving up a single game on his serve.
Shapovalov reached the semi-finals in Rome in 2020.
