2022 World Cup qualifiers: South Africa have qualification advantage ahead of Ghana decider

Published on: 13 November 2021

South Africa on Thursday took a giant step towards reaching the World Cup qualifiers play-offs after beating Zimbabwe in Johannesburg.

Although not convincing, Bafana got the job done and are heavy favourites to advance to the next round ahead of Ghana.

Earlier that day Ghana had failed to beat Ethiopia as the match ended 1-1 in the same city but at the Orlando Stadium.

South Africa and Ghana are set for a decider on Sunday with both teams capable of topping the group which guarantees a place in the final qualifying round.

A win or draw will be enough for Bafana who are three clear at the top while Ghana need any sort of victory, raising stakes for the game.

South Africa arrived in Ghana before the Black Stars because the latter didn't travel immediately after the match and trained early Friday.

South Africa meanwhile travelled on Thursday night and touched in Cape Coast in the afternoon to start preparations for their biggest game of the year.

South Africa's last visit to Ghana was in 2019 and they tasted a 2-0 defeat in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

However, Bafana are confident coming into this one because they beat Ghana by a lone goal in their last meeting in Johannesburg.
