Gambia held Algeria to a 1-1 draw in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification Group D match at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Saturday night.

As a result, the Scopians remained third on the Group D standings, and Desert Foxes also remained at the top of the table.

The Scorpions had lost 1-0 to Benin away in their first Group D game in June 2017, while Desert Foxes defeated Togo 1-0 at home.

Algeria dominated the game from the start and they came close to opening the scoring through Ramy Bensebaini.

Portugal-based striker Yacine Brahimi's corner-kick found Bensebaini, whose header narrowly missed the target in the 11th minute.

The Desert Foxes kept pushing and they had another chance to score 10 minutes before the half-hour mark.

Riyad Mahrez dribbled past two Gambia defenders, before unleashing a low shot which went inches wide of the target.

However, Gambia were able to contain Algeria until Tunisian referee Youssef Essrayri blew the half-time whistle with the two teams locked at 0-0.

It took only two minutes in the second half for Baghdad Bounedjah to break the deadlock - silencing the home crowd.

The Qatar-based striker beat Gambia goalkeeper Modou Jobe to make it 1-0 to Algeria as the visitors deservedly took the lead.

However, the lead only lasted for two minutes as the hosts responded with a goal.

Assan Ceesay beat Algeria's experienced Rais M'Bolhi to make it 1-1 for Gambia much to the delight of the home crowd.

The Scorpions and Desert Foxes both searched for more goals in the closing stages of the encounter.

However, the two teams were unable to score in the dying minutes of the game and ultimately, Gambia, and Algeria drew 1-1.
