Al Ittihad v Medeama Preview: Ghanaians out to flex muscle against North Africans

Published on: 13 March 2016

Medeama will face Al Ittihad in the round of 32 of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday with the Ghanaians hoping to flex their muscles against their North African opponent.

The cast has been thrown for the highly-respected Ghanaian side ahead of the crucial first leg tie in Sfax, Tunisia.

The FA and Super Cup holders will fancy their chances after the game was moved to Tunisia due to the unstable political climate in Libya.

The situation does present Medeama will a real opportunity to stake a claim for the maximum points at the Taïeb Mhiri Municipal stadium.

However, they will have to be cautious against a side who hammered Nigerien side Sonidep 4-1 at the same venue three weeks ago.

Locally, Medeama hit a snag in terms of continuing their good form, two defeats and a draw in their opening three games has not been flattering for the Tarkwa-based side.

The Mauve and Yellows were left frustrated in the Ghanaian top-flight after losing to Ashantigold and Hearts of Oak.

Thereafter, the hugely-rated Ghanaian side managed a 2-2 stalemate with former champions Asante Kotoko in their last Premier League fixture.

With the Ghanaian top-flight league out of sight, Medeama turned their attention to the Caf Confederation Cup first leg tie against Al Ittihad on Sunday.

There are no injury worries for coach Tom Strand after the side completed their final training session on Saturday.

The players appear to be in good mood with massive determination well written on their faces.

They have been hugely motivated to record a decent result ahead of the return fixture in Ghana next week.

Medeama are the only surviving Ghanaian club in Africa inter-club competition following the exit of Ashantigold from the CAF Champions League.

The battle lines have been drawn for one of Africa's fastest rising teams- Medeama -who drew bye due to the side's sterling performance in their debut campaign three years ago.

The task appear daunting with massive concerns about the weather in Sfax.

Al Ittihad cannot be taken out of the picture after their impressive showing so far.

A heavy 4-1 win over Sonidep did the trick for the Libyan side as they lost 3-1 against the Nigerien side in the reverse fixture.
