Ex-international Augustine Arhinful has hailed the decision of Emmanuel Frimpong to pledge his future to Ghana.

The Arsenal defensive enforcer opted to play for his country of his birth after he met top officials of the Ghana Football Association at London on Monday night.

The GFA must now wait on certifications from the English FA and his parents for onward transfer to the world's football governing body to formalize the nationality switch of the 19-year-old.

The 1996 Olympian is delighted with the decision of the youngster and reckons he will fit into Coach Goran Stevanovic's plans.

"It's great news for the national team and I'm happy for him for taken such a decision. He plays more defensively and we don't have many players with such traits in the team," Arhinful told Citi Sports.

"He is young with massive potential and so I believe Goran Stevanovic will know how he will use him to fit into the team properly."

The former AshantiGold player has extolled the qualities of the Arsenal youngster.

"He's strong and fights for the ball arrogantly and that for me is the kind of player we need to augment the effort of the others in the team and hopefully we'll achieve that dream as a country."

He was called up to Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 squad for their matches against Israel and Azerbaijan but withdrew from the party last week with a foot injury.
