Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira's bittersweet return to Arsenal

Published on: 19 October 2021

Patrick Vieira returned to Arsenal as an opposing coach on Monday night and his Crystal Palace side left with a draw, though the manner in which they had to share the points will leave the Frenchman frustrated.

The Emirates Stadium welcomed him back with warm applause, likely not expecting his Palace side to cause the Gunners so many problems on the night.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead only for Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard to score in the second half and have the visitors closing in on a shock win. But Alexandre Lacazaette levelled in the 95th minute to save Mikel Arteta's blushes.

Both Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey started for the hosts and they hit the ground running, allowing them to go ahead early on through Aubameyang.

Palace then failed to react in the first half, but Arsenal lost Bukayo Saka at the break and then the away side came back to lead.

The Gunners had to scrap and pile forward late on, pushing for an equaliser that looked as though it would evade them. But Lacazette appeared right in time to claim a point.
