Berekum Chelsea drop points at home against Bechem

Against the odds, relegation-trapped Bechem United held champions Berekum Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at the Golden City Park on Saturday.

Peter Essien opened the scoring for Dan Owusu's side on 16 minutes before substitute Eric Agyemang scored 11 minutes from time to earn a point.

Chelsea enjoyed the better part of the exchanges, winning five corner kicks under five minutes but the hosts however failed to take advantage of their early dominance.

Emmanuel Clottey had the first glimpse at goal with a powerful long-range shot that sailed over the crossbar.

But the champions found themselves behind on 16 minutes when Essien connected on the goal line.

Chelsea sensing the realities of a second defeat on home ground this season pressed for the leveller.

Nimble-footed Solomon Asante showed great speed and movement in midfield creating the link-up with Clottey but Bechem United thwarted their efforts.

Left-back Richard Kissi Boateng walked his way forward before attempting a shot at goal but his effort ricocheted off the woodwork.

Samuel Kyere's ineffectiveness in on the right side of defence forced Dutch gaffer Hans Van der Plyum to pull him out for the experienced Eric Agyemang.

Chelsea could not find the equalizer before the first half petered out.

Nigerien forward Musa Mohammed was lively moments after the interval but failed to do what was required of a striker.

Former Ghana Under-20 star Gladson Awako was withdrawn five minutes after the break with Yaw Alexander taking his place in midfield.

It was a clear move from van der Plyum to stifle the midfield and create a particular playing pattern which was lacking from their play from the onset.

Emmanuel Clottey had his face in his hands when he shot wide from an advantageous position.

The home was disgruntled with the delay tactics and the diamond tree formation which took away the beauty of the game.

Eric Agyemang snatched the equalizer for Chelsea when he directed his corner kick straight into the net with eleven minutes left for play.

The substitute Agyemang wonderfully curled an effort from corner which Ransford Cudjoe failed to deal with.
