Botswana lose key player for AFCON opener against Ghana

Botswana's utility player Diphetogo 'Dipsy' Selolwane is set to miss the team's opening AFCON fixture against Ghana due to suspension.

Confederation of African Football has brought the issue to the attention of the Botswana Football Association (BFA) that the Supersport United player has picked up two consecutive yellow cards in the last two games of the qualifiers against Malawi at home and away to Togo.

As a result 'Dipsy' will serve one match suspension, meaning he will have to sit out of the all- crucial Ghana tie.

Coach Stan Tshosane named the 33-year old as his skipper for the finals after announcing his final squad last week.

BFA Technical Director, Tlhagiso Sethibe confirmed to Sport Monitor over the weekend that they have received a correspondence from the continental body regarding the players' yellow cards.

Sethibe however said they were not aware of the second yellow that the player allegedly picked against Togo in Lome in September last year.

He said they were only aware of the player's yellow card against Malawi in June at the UB stadium and has since responded to CAF and still awaiting feedback.

BFA mouthpiece, Phakamile Kraii said on Saturday that the association is working around the clock to track down the match commissioner for the Togo game to verify with his match report.

Selolwane is a key member of Tshosane's team having not missed a single game in the qualifiers.

The Zebras are currently in camp in Douala, Cameroon and efforts to get hold of the team's media officer there hit a blank.

FIFA rules states that a player will serve one match suspension after picking up a yellow card in two consecutive matches.

The world governing body, however, altered the rule for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to avoid 'big names' missing out on matches.

For the world cup semi-finals, players would only serve a one-match suspension following a dismissal during a match.
