Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has terminated his contract with German side Schalke, paving the way for him to join Italian giants AC Milan.

Schalke and the Ghana international player agreed to mutually terminate his contract with the Bundesliga club on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old will become available as a free agent to play for any other club from 1st January 2016.

"The terms of the agreement will remain undisclosed," a statement from the German Bundesliga side Schalke read on Tuesday.

Boateng is now free to sign for AC Milan as predicted by Ghana's leading football new outfit, GHANAsoccernet.com.

Boateng had been training with the Rossoneri and playing in friendly games for a couple of months in anticipation of a deal to return to AC Milan.

Schalke signed the midfielder from AC Milan in August 2013.

AC Milan sold Boateng to Schalke in 2013 for €10m and will now sign him for free.

Boateng played 60 matches for Schalke - 46 in the Bundesliga, 12 in European competitions and two in the DFB Cup.

He scored seven goals in all matches for Schalke.
