Brighton coach Graham Potter has explained his decision to substitute Tariq Lamptey on Saturday in the Premier League match against Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old was a real threat down the right-wing at Villa Park as he harried, hassled, and largely got the better of Villa full-back Matt Targett.
His pace and elusiveness kept the hosts on their toes and perhaps it was no coincidence that when he was withdrawn shortly before the 80th-minute, Steven Gerrard's side scored twice not long afterwards to take three points.
The decision drew criticism from Brighton fans but Potter explained that Lamptey was taken off as they didn't want to push him too hard after his time on the sidelines,
Potter told Sussex Live: "Yeah. He sprinted such a lot.
"We know where he has come from and what his history is. It was a case of making sure he is available for the rest of the season and we are still building him up to that point.
"I am really happy with how he contributed to the game."
Lamptey since his return from hamstring injury has featured in five consecutive league games for Brighton.
