Bruno Lage: Wolves will fight to keep Ruben Neves

Published on: 01 April 2022

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has again underlined his ambition to keep midfield star Ruben Neves at the club.

90min understands that Wolves are open to giving Neves a significantly improved contract, but they are aware of the major interest in the player.

Sources have told 90min that Neves has not ruled out signing a new long-term deal at Molineux, but he is believed to be considering his future going into this summer.

Manchester United are long-term admirers of the 25-year-old, along with Arsenal and Barcelona, and Lage admits that he is not surprised by the interest.

“What is important to say is that it’s very hard to find a player like him," Lage said ahead of Wolves' Midlands derby against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

"We used to call it a defensive midfielder, but it’s now a central midfielder - a guy who can defend and can attack. He can do both things. He can score goals and do assists. It’s very hard to find.

“From my side, he knows my opinion - I want the best for his career. If he prefers to remain with us, for sure we will be happy and stronger. But this is football and you never know.

“When you see the way he’s playing, he’s a big loss for us at the moment. You never know what can happen. There could be a big team with a big offer and we would need to analyse what is best for us and for the player.”
