BUNDES - Awoniyi stars again as Union Berlin beat Mainz

Union Berlin came back from a goal down to beat Mainz 2-1 on Sunday, continuing their strong start to the Bundesliga season. Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored two goals against his former team.

In the second half, Awoniyi scored twice in four minutes to give Union their first away win of the season and propel them to seventh place in the table.

Marcus Ingvartsen, a Union loanee, gave Mainz the lead soon before the interval after a slow first half with few chances at either end.

Due to a blunder by Union midfielder Genki Haraguchi, the home side launched a lightning-quick assault down the left flank, and Ingvartsen touched Karim Onisiwo's low cross inside the near post.

As Union came back after the break, it was former Mainz striker Awoniyi who had the final laugh.

After missing a few chances throughout the game, the Nigerian leveled the scores 20 minutes from time with a beautiful counter-attack finish.

The 24-year-old scored Union's first goal only a few minutes later, grabbing onto a long pass and holding off the Mainz back line before putting the ball into the bottom corner.
