C.Sutton, J.Redknapp and S.Houghton give their verdicts on England v Scotland

Published on: 18 June 2021

England face Scotland in an Auld Enemy clash at Wembley on Friday night - with huge pressure on England to beat their unfancied rivals and advance to the knockouts stages of Euro 2020.

Scotland come into this game wounded after a damaging 2-0 opening defeat to Czech Republic last time out, while England are in good spirits having beaten Croatia 1-0 thanks to Raheem Sterling's strike.

Sportsmail columnists CHRIS SUTTON, JAMIE REDKNAPP and STEPH HOUGHTON have given their predictions and verdicts on the huge game, and where they feel the match will be won and lost.

CHRIS SUTTON - 2-0 to England

Scotland should really be fielding a 5-4-1 formation with James Forrest and Ryan Fraser on the wings.

They're the ball carriers who could help the Scots get up the pitch. Che Adams must start this time around, too, and he can play off Lyndon Dykes.

Like Wales with Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, Scotland do have a player who can make things happen, and that's John McGinn (or 'McGinniesta' I should say). But ultimately, I expect England to have too much for Scotland at Wembley.

I'm predicting Gareth Southgate's side can and will make it two wins from two in Group D.

JAMIE REDKNAPP - 2-1 to England

This has all the makings of a great game.

The fact that Scotland lost their opener means they cannot afford to be overly cautious. Steve Clarke's side have to come out and try to win, and that might suit Gareth Southgate's England.

In their opener against Croatia, it was a sweltering hot day, and the players found it difficult to press and maintain the ferocious pace which we often see in the Premier League.

This is a night game, at Wembley, in front of fans. I'm hoping we'll see a few goals, and I predict England can win 2-1.

STEPH HOUGHTON - 2-0 to England

A huge, huge game.

I don't think it gets much bigger than England versus Scotland. I think Scotland will be fired up, and will desperately want to beat England but I really think England will be too strong.

I think England have too much strength in depth in their squad and so I'm going to go for an England win.

It will be quite close but I think England's quality and experience in these types of tournaments will see them through.
