EXPERT INSIDER: BVB fans warn Liverpool of Klopp burnout

Published on: 11 November 2015

Liverpool fans beware - your players could be left feeling KLOPPED OUT under the new management regime.

Though Jurgen Klopp's arrival on Merseyside has prompted much fanfare - and who could resist getting excited about the charismatic German's appointment? - there is a slight question mark against his methods.

Universally adored in Dortmund, where he garnered his global reputation, BVB fans do have one word of caution about his Anfield tenure.

Like Jose Mourinho, there's a feeling his intense nature makes his stars burn brightly, but then burn out.

Chelsea's struggles this season - and the frequently mentioned 'three year effect' throughout his career - are testament to the Special One's short-term nature.

And some feel that Klopp could face something of a similar challenge.

I attended a meet-up for Dortmund's London fan club on Sunday, as they beat local rivals Schalke, and supporters were unanimous in their praise for Klopp.

Certainly, they think he is the man to restore Liverpool to the Champions League over the next two years. But, longer term, they think his all or nothing approach may run out of steam, as it did during his final season at Dortmund.

With the club embroiled in a relegation battle for much of the campaign, their eventual finish of seventh represented a significant fall from grace.

Klopp retained the full trust of his board throughout, but realised himself that his time had come to move on, taking a sabbatical last summer, which he broke to replace Brendan Rodgers.

Already, observers have hailed his impact on the Kop, with his preferred style of play noticeable, though results remain mixed.

In his debut game at the helm, Liverpool became the first team to out-run opponents Tottenham, an all-action nature that has continued. Whether his players have the stamina to maintain that approach for years to come is unknown.

Comparing him to Mourinho's recurring three-year limit of effectiveness is slightly harsh, though, as Klopp presided over six positive seasons at the Westfalenstadion before last year's blip.

But a repeat struggle at Liverpool would formally diagnose his condition - though, in the hyper short attention span of the Premier League that might make him fit right in.

CHECK OUT THE BVB LONDONERS

A quick mention of the fan club I mentioned above. If you're interested in attending future events, simply type 'Borussia Dortmund Fan Club London' into Facebook and you'll find them.

Of the Dortmund vs Schalke match itself, Europe's top goal-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang again stole the show, with another 'Batman' celebration after his winning goal.

Quite how long he'll remain in Germany is another matter entirely – but more of that next week…
