FC Lugano has apologised for its fans' racist abuse of St Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi during a league match at the weekend.

The 23-year-old was a subject of intense abuse after his side lost 1-0 in the Swiss Super League.

But the club has moved quickly to render an unqualified apology to St Gallen and the player.

“We would like to apologize to FC St. Gallen and the player. There must be no place for racism. The club will do its best to find those responsible." Lugano tweeted.

FC Gallen are yet to respond.

The nasty incident has overshadowed Lugano's 1-0 win over St.Gallen - the first defeat suffered by the visitors since the start of the season.
