Gasperini: Genoa only have themselves to blame

After suffering yet another Serie A defeat during their visit to AC Milan that hovers them dangerously close to the relegation zone, Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini admitted his side only have themselves to blame.

The Grifone fell behind early to a Carlos Bacca striker and then Keisuke Honda made it 2-0 midway through the second-half, as the Rossoblu failed to threaten the Rossoneri goal until injury-time when Alessio Cerci netted.

“Defeats at home are what have got us into the situation we find ourselves in,” Gasperini told the post-match press conference.

“To remedy those errors was not easy with recent fixtures, now it becomes easier.

“In the first-half it was a good game, it was not easy but we kept our shape and made the best of our ability today.

“Apart from the result was not a bad match.”

With Riccardo Fiamozzi making his first Serie A start for the Grifone, his coach praised the 22-year-old’s contribution and that of striker Tim Matavz who filled in for the injured Leonardo Pavoletti.

“He did well, as did Matavz,” claimed Gasperini. “But they are still months away [from match fitness].

“Milan were in good condition, we have five new players from the January transfer window.

“It was a match that was beneficial for them, and some have proved to be ready, we now need to move up the rankings but it will not be easy.”
