Gennaro Gattuso was clear in his assessment of Napoli’s 1-1 draw in Holland against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening: “We took risks this evening; the draw is a positive result.
“We didn’t produce a great performance and we know that. It’s true that after the first goal, we had chances to put the game to bed. We didn’t manage the contest well in the second half.
“We should also be pleased that we managed to dig in. On another day, we could’ve lost against an aggressive and well-organised AZ side. We have to take the positives.
“I expected a bit more from the players who came on. Our subs from the bench usually make a key contribution, but it wasn’t a great overall display tonight.
“We’ll be playing for our place in the next round on Thursday at home to Real Sociedad. We’ll have to battle from start to finish.”
