Ghana captain John Mensah says Stephen Appiah has impacted positively in his successful leadership of the Black Stars.

The Lyon centre-back was confirmed Ghana captain in March after Appiah called time on his international career after the 2010 Fifa World Cup in August.

Mensah scored in the 2-0 win over Sudan two weeks ago in the final 2012 Nations Cup qualifier.

The 29-year-old wants to win the country's fifth continental silverware at next year's finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

He says he is still benefiting from Appiah's advice from behind the scenes.

"Stephen has been of great help to me in terms of advice. He has the experience and he has thought me a lot," Mensah said.

"I believe that has helped me to do well as a captain. There is control and stability in the team."

Appiah captained Ghana to two successful World Cup finals.

He made scored 16 goals in 69 caps for Ghana.
