Alexander Djiku has refused to rule out playing for his hometown Montpellier one day.
The Ghana defender was born in Montpellier and grew up supporting the region's biggest club, Montpellier Herault SC.
But he never had the opportunity to play for the Ligue 1 club. Djiku, instead, began his career with Bastia B, then moved on to Caen and is now a key player for Strasbourg.
Djiku, however, still retains a special bond with the Montpellier team.
In an interview with Midi-Libre, the Strasbourg midfielder discussed his attachment to the club as he prepares to face them on Saturday.
"It's not necessarily a regret. A career is long, maybe one day I will play there… There have been a few talks in the past, but nothing concrete… I don't have a feeling of revenge, but rather of pride to evolve in front of my friends and my family. The most important thing was to make a professional career,” said Djiku.
“My parents, who still live in Montpellier, will necessarily be present at the match, my friends too. Besides, I'm still looking for places. Their education played an important role, gave me a guideline.”
“I know what I want, I do everything I can to achieve it [...] It's a real pleasure to come back to La Mosson, but I've never played in Montpellier. I lived for two or three years in the Paillade district.”
“I was a supporter of Montpellier. In 2012, when they were champions with Giroud, Belhanda, Cabella…, I was going to see them play. Today it's nice to play in this stadium.”
Djiku plays for the Black Stars because of his Ghanaian parents.
