Ghana FA rallies for WC squad support

The Ghana Football Association says it demands respect and support from critics who have questioned the composition of the 30-man provisional World Cup squad. Head coach Milovan Rajevac named crocked Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, injury prone John Mensah and inactive sextet-Haminu Draman, Rahim Ayew, Stephen Appiah, Eric Addo, Dominic Adiyiah and first choice goalkeeper Richard Kingson in his squad.

But the Ghana FA claims questions raised about the squad are unempirical and has expressed full confidence in the players picked for next month's assignment.

"We must respect and appreciate the fact that the selection of the players has been made after a series of painstaking efforts and discussions by people who have been asssigned and mandated to do that-in this case the technical team," Ghana FA Vice-President Fred Pappoe said.

"They went round, did their work and came back and presented a list to a panel for discussions to justify their choices or decisions to include or not to include some players.

"The original squad they brought over, there was one significant change so we just have to respect that. We have given some people work to do and we must respect their opinions and wishes."

Ghana will begin a pre-tournament training camp in France from 24-27 May before playing Holland on 1 June in Rotterdam.

The Black Stars will then move to England to wrap their preparations with a friendly against Latvia on 5 June.

Ghana play Serbia in their Group D opener on 13 June.
