Ghana favourites to stop Sudan again

It will be first up against second when Ghana host Sudan in Kumasi on Sunday in a Group I match of the 2012 Nations Cup qualifying tournament.

Last month, the Black Stars cruised to a 3-0 win away in Swaziland, while Sudan stopped Congo Brazzaville 2-0 at home on the opening day of action in this section.

Both countries also clashed in the final qualifying rounds of the 2010 World Cup with the Ghanaians winning 2-0 home and away.

Ghana will go on to qualify for the World Cup, where they equalled Africa’s best showing at the tournament by reaching the last eight, while Sudan finished bottom of the group with a point from six matches.

The Black Stars are therefore odds-on favourites to again win easily inside the 40 000-capacity Baba Yara Stadium in the ‘Garden City’ of Kumasi.

However, they will be without Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac, who has dumped them for the petro-dollars in Saudi Arabia.

The Black Stars turned away hosts Swaziland in September amid speculations over Rajevac’s future.

One of the highlights of that win was the debut of 18-year-old Jordan Ayew. The youngest of the Ayew dynasty is again in line for more action this weekend.

Rajevac’s assistant, Kwesi Appiah, will now take charge of the team until a substantive coach is named by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Sunderland defender John Mensah, who missed the trip to Swaziland, has returned to the fold, while Italy-based midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng has been ruled out as a result of injury.

Sampson Cudjoe from local side AshantiGold has been drafted as Boateng’s replacement.

The form of Isaac Vorsah must be a big boost for coach Appiah as the big central defender has so far netted twice for his German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

Inter Milan star midfielder Sulley Muntari has again been overlooked, like was the case against Swaziland.
