Ghana national amputee football team neglected by country

The National Amputee Football team is on the brink of missing out on this year’s world championship in Argentina due to inadequate funds.

The team has only managed to raise 39,000 Ghana Cedis out of the over 80, 000 Ghana Cedis needed to make the trip for the tournament in Argentina from October 14 to 29.

There is no governmental or GFA support for the team of disabled, the most disadvantaged Ghanaians, who have brought honour to the country by winning the continental tournament. Ghana earned the place to play in the prestigious tournament due to its high rating on the continent.

The team risks sanctions from the World Amputee Football Federation if they fail to make it to the games.

Adjtetey Sowah, the Manager of Ghana’s amputee football team told Joy Sports “our plight is resentful”.

He said the games are just seven days away and anxiety is setting in amongst the players and management.

Mr. Sowah regretted that all the letters they wrote to corporate organizations had received no favourable response.

He fears the situation may exacerbate the stigmatization against persons living with disabilities.
