Egyptian top-flight side Ghazl El-Mahalla have opened an investigation into the conduct of their Ghanaian player Francis Afriyie for allegedly threatening a journalist with death.

The 26-year-old will also be reported to the Players Affairs Committee for the Egypt Football Association (EFA) after being accused of aggresive behaviour.

The striker was reported to the club's heirarchy by the coach on Tuesday after he being accused hurling verbal insults at the reporter which was laden with the death threats.

According to Egyptian media reports, the attacker jumped over the barriers around the club's training field to confront the journalist before security restrained him.

Afriyie is reported to have resisted attempts by his team-mates to calm him down as he tried to physically assault the journalist before security intervened to stop him.

Apart from the disciplinary action, the incident has put the future of the Ghanaian player at the club in doubt as he has played just 47 minutes since joining the club in January,

Afriyie joined sthe Peasants Leader as a free agent after refusing to extend his contract at Botswana side Township Rollers last year.

The pacey forward penned a six-month loan deal with Ghazl El-Mahalla on Monday.

Afriyie begun his career at Ghana Premier League side Bechem United before leaving the Hunters to join Serbian side Vojvodina in 2017.

Afriyie featured for Murciélagos Fútbol Club for a season before swapping the Mexican club for Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in 2019.
