Ghana's top-flight planning league expansion

Ghana’s top flight league could be expanded to 20 teams if the federation’s ruling body, Congress, approves proposed plans.

Several club owners in the country have mooted for clubs in the Ghana Premier League to be increased from 16 to 20 teams.

A meeting has been set for 18 August to decide whether more teams should be admitted to league with some arguing that there are too many strong teams in the second tier league.

If Congress approves the proposal by the club owners, the clubs could be admitted before the start of the new season in the first week of September.

Despite the positives mooted by those seeking the expansion, league organizers, the Profeossional League Board, (PLB) claim it will disrupt their plans.

"I am through with the fixtures of the league but if I released it now I would be accused of trying to sabotage the 20-team agenda so I am holding on,” PLB boss Welbeck Abra Appiah said.

“If congress decides to go with that, a lot of things will change, we will have to re-do the fixtures, up the number of referees which we had intended to cut down and do a lot of things all over again," he said.

Several well-supported clubs including Sekondi-based duo of Hassacas and Eleven Wise as well as Accra Great Olympics were relegated last season.

Some strong clubs like Medeama FC and Abedi Pele’s Nania FC will also be considered for promotion to the top flight if the decision is approved.
