Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has launched an appeal in England to help nurses treating cancer patients in the city of Sunderland.

The World Player of the Year nominee who plays for the city’s biggest club Sunderland initiated the fund-raising drive.

Gyan is urging Wearsiders to help raise an estimated £196,377 to fund the Marie Curie Nursing Service in the city this year.

But the multimillion-pound signing was surprised when he turned up to find a gang of cardboard nurses on hand to greet him.

The charity launched its first Nursing Appeal in Sunderland with a help from the Ghanaian striker.

Marie Curie nurse Paula Grufferty, who is fronting the appeal, is one of 24 Marie Curie nurses in Sunderland who provide a free nursing service for terminally-ill people who want to be cared for at home.

Last year, Paula and her colleagues provided more than 15,695 hours of care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in Sunderland, which cost more than £178,151.

Meanwhile, Gyan will appear at the club’s store today to meet fans of Sunderland who are keen on meeting him face-to-face.

He will sign autographs for the supporter especially children while giving photo opportunity for the rest.

Gyan has proved to be hugely popular since joining the club from French side Rennes even though he is yet to be a regular player for the club.
