Thomas Partey came off the bench to impress against Barcelona

Diego Simeone heaved his sight at his dug-out and ushered in Partey with 74 minutes on the clock and he assigned the confidence-brimming midfielder to gag every last space in the midfield and further frustrate the visitors midfield operations.

The high-rising Ghanaian midfielder came off the Atletico Madrid bench to impress as Los Rojiblancos overturned a 2-1 first-leg defeat to eliminate holders Barcelona in a 3-2 aggregate win to reach the semi-finals of the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday night.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone introduced the midfielder as a 74th minute replacement for Yannick Carrasco and he anchored the midfield for the host with a robust and determined display.

Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico Madrid the lead when he headed Saul Niguez's clever cross into the top corner and Luis Enrique's side managed just one shot on target.

Griezmann made it 2-0 from the penalty spot three minutes from time after Andres Iniesta had handled in the box.

Atletico Madrid enjoyed a night of cherishing memory but for Partey, it was another night to confirm his status as a finished article and ready for the pantheon of top level football.

In the first-leg at the Camp Nou, he received commendation from fans after his off-the-bench display helped ten-man Atleti to keep the tie widely opened.

While Ghanaian fans obviously feel excited about the 22-year-old's show against the dethroned champions, Ghana's national team selectors should be scratching their heads on why they omitted his name from their squad for the recent assignment.

But while Avram Grant and his number 2 keep sweeping his name under the carpet, the former Tema Youth player has his focus perfectly fixed on carving his own niche at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

He could end up joining the few Ghanaian iconic names who have played at the grand finale of the Uefa Champions League with the semi-final draw set to take place on Friday morning.

Atleti could get Bayern Munich, Manchester City or cross-city rivals Real Madrid who are gunning for their 11th Champions League title.
