Former Black Stars forward Mohammed Polo has paid a glowing tribute to 1978 AFCON winner Opoku Afriyie, who passed on last Sunday.

Afriyie died at the age of 65 after a short illness.

Polo, who was a teammate of Afriyie at the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations says 'Bayie' as he is affectionately known was one of the best strikers the country has produced.

He is even went on to compare him with German great Gerd Muller.

“Opoku Afriyie is one of the best strikers the country has produced," he told Happy FM.

“He benched the likes of George Alhassan, Willie Klutse in the national team as he played consistently.

“He scored the two goals in the finals which help Ghana win the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations against Uganda at home”.

“I will compare him to German Football legend Gerd Muller. He is a talent born goalscorer”.

Opoku Afriyie was one of the few player to don the jerseys of rivals Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

He was top scorer in the domestic league in 1979 and 1981.
