BUNDES - Sane's strikes pivots Bayern to a win against Benfica

Published on: 20 October 2021

Bayern Munich beat Benfica 4-0 on Wednesday, maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League group stage this season, thanks to two goals from Leroy Sane in the second half.

Bayern has now won three games in a row without conceding a goal and has a five-point lead at the top of Group E, putting them in the next round.

In a tense opening hour, VAR denied the six-time European Cup champions twice, until Sane finally pierced Benfica's defenses with a fizzing dead-ball shot 20 minutes from time.

In the dying minutes, the German international added another goal and an assist as the hosts crumbled and Bayern cruised to yet another comfortable Champions League victory this season.

Bayern were without a few key players, including Leon Goretzka, Alphonso Davies, and head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was out with a "flu-like condition," according to the club.
