Jawula: Berekum Chelsea must change name

Published on: 28 March 2012

Ex-Ghana FA boss Mohammed Nuru Deen Jawula wants Berekum Chelsea to change their name claiming their successes in continental competition will not promote the country.

The Ghanaian side are named after English Premier League side Chelsea but the CAF Inter Club Committee member says all the praise will go to the London club.

This comes after the club thumped Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca 5-0 over in the second round, first leg match of the African Champions League in Berekum on Sunday.

With this result Chelsea are almost certain to go through to the next round and with their performance many have tipped them to do well in this year's competition.

However, Jawula says the Ghanaian club must consider changing their name to ensure that the country gets the full benefits of their participation in continental competition

"I think whatever happens with Chelsea (in the Champions’ League), we can only say it is good for Ghana," the former Ghana FA boss said.

"The only thing that is not good for Ghana perhaps is the name.

"People say Chelsea of Ghana and other people are wondering if it’s the same team in London.

“Usually this is the time when the teams do better, it will be good enough if we adopted names that are more indigenous and that could promote our country Ghana."

Berekum Chelsea will travel to Morocco to face Raja for the second leg in two weeks' time.
