Joao Felix confirms his season is over due to hamstring injury

Published on: 19 April 2022

Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix has confirmed that he will miss the remainder of the 2021/22 season as a result of suffering a hamstring injury.

Felix started Sunday's 2-1 win over Espanyol but was withdrawn at half-time after complaining of pain in his left hamstring, with Atletico later confirming that he was set for a spell on the sidelines.

However, the Portuguese went a little further on social media and confirmed that the injury will prevent him from returning before the end of the campaign - only a few weeks away.

"Unfortunately, the news is not what I wanted and with deep sadness, I find myself unable to help my team in what remains to be played this season," he wrote.

"Now, I can only support Atleti from the outside and work hard on my recovery to come back stronger."

Atletico also lost left winger Thomas Lemar to the same issue at the same time as Felix, but there has been no update on whether the Frenchman will be able to return this term.

Elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Manchester City means that Diego Simeone's side have no more silverware left to play for this season, having fallen too far behind in La Liga's title race, and their focus is now solely on securing a spot in the top four.

They currently sit fourth in the table, level on points with Barcelona, who have a game in hand, and Sevilla, although both sides boast a superior goal difference to Atlei. Real Betis and Real Sociedad are also three and five points behind respectively.

Simeone's side have some tricky fixtures to close out the season, including facing cross-town rivals Real Madrid, plus Sevilla and Real Sociedad, but they will have to cope without Felix.
