Jurgen Klopp predicts the best is yet to come from Thiago at Liverpool after taking time to adapt

Jurgen Klopp has predicted the best is about to come from Thiago Alcantara with the midfielder ready to banish a difficult first year at Liverpool.

It was on this day 12 months ago that Liverpool completed a £20million deal to bring the Spain international from Bayern Munich.

His signing, as a 29-year-old, was a break from the usual profile of player that Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners, have pursued.

But his first three months were disrupted after he contracted Covid-19 then damaged his medial ligament in the Merseyside derby. There were, however, signs at the end of the last campaign that he was beginning to find his feet — he had a key role in the games that got Liverpool into the Champions League — and Klopp is adamant Thiago has turned a corner and is poised to become a huge influence.

‘There is much more to come from him,’ said Klopp. ‘The start was not perfect. Of course, that makes everything a little more difficult. But he showed what kind of a player he can and will be for us.

‘He is a really good character and personality and obviously a world-class player. So all fine. Yes, he has had to adapt to the way we defend. We want him to play his natural football.’
