Ghana's No. 1

Lyon midfielder could be ideal Man City addition as Riyad Mahrez makes retirement wish

Here are your Manchester City evening headlines on Friday, September 23.

Manchester City haven't had the need to shop in the bargain bucket in recent years but they recently proved they're not averse to a good deal when they can find one.

City didn't go into the summer planning to buy a centre-back and appeared to have little intention of doing so with a week remaining of the window. Yet, after being given a warning on how light they could be when John Stones and Nathan Ake briefly joined Aymeric Laporte on the sidelines, they moved to bring in some reinforcements.

In what could well be the bargain of the summer (other than Erling Haaland, of course) the Blues added Manuel Akanji to Pep Guardiola's squad for a mere £15million. Just three games in and the centre-back has seamlessly fitted into the side and looks to be very smart piece of recruitment.

Riyad Mahrez says he wishes to conclude his career at Manchester City and has no plans to retire any time soon.

The winger signed a new deal in July that keeps him at the Etihad until 2025 after ending last season as the club’s top goalscorer with 24 across all competitions. However, the Algerian has started just three times this season and has only seen out a whole 90 minutes on one occasion.

He is yet to score or assist this campaign after eight outings while first-choice Bernardo Silva has recorded two goals and three assists. Mahrez has lifted three league titles, an FA Cup and three League Cups since his 2018 switch from Leicester.
