Man City reject Stefan Savic is back on their transfer radar (MEN)

The tousle-haired Montenegrin defender leading the resistance to an increasingly desperate Liverpool attack at Anfield last month did not escape the notice of Manchester City.

Atletico Madrid star Stefan Savic has always been an uncompromising defender, and he is back on the Blues' radar after leaving them in 2012, after just one underwhelming season according to Manchester Evening News.

Indeed, the biggest impact he made in that brief, unhappy spell was on the calf of manager Roberto Mancini in his first training session, much to the amusement of his new teammates.

City are seeking a new centre back this summer, possibly even two, and Savic – who just about qualified for a Premier League winner's medal in 2012 after playing a dozen league games – has not escaped their notice.

His contract is down to its last two years, and Atletico are understood to be willing to sell at the right price.

That attitude took a bit of damage in his uneventful season for City, when he is best remembered for conceding the penalty which saw them beaten by Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final.

He left at the end of the campaign for nothing, although City secured Matija Nastasic from his new club in a kind of swap deal, the Serbian costing them £12m as a result.

It was bad business. Nastasic also failed to impress and is now a jobbing defender with Schalke, while Savic re-built his career in Serie A and cost Atletico £22m when he moved on in 2015.
