Manchester United “open to recruiting another centre-half” even if Varane signs

Manchester United’s spending spree

Manchester United have been busy already this summer. Tom Heaton has rejoined the club on a free transfer, but the statement business so far is their acquisition of Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho, costing a meagre 73 million pounds.

Although the Englishman is yet to be unveiled as a Red Devil, Manchester United tweeted on the 1st July that they “have agreed a deal in principle” for his signing, suggesting that the deal is done.

In addition to this, Raphael Varane appears to be edging towards a move to Old Trafford, providing a fee can be agreed, with trusted transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano speaking of Varane’s desire for “A Premier League experience”, which has left the Red Devils in pole position.

As per the Manchester Evening News, Varane is now in “United mode”, expecting a deal to be struck, which will strengthen United’s defence to no end.

Another centre back in?

However, the former Premier League giants are seemingly not happy with just one centre back in, with Samuel Luckhurst reporting that “the club is open to recruiting another centre half” even beyond Raphael Varane. A glance at current options make it easy to see why: Victor Lindelof is a solid if unspectacular option, but the likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe have all been left wanting in previous appearances.

Any incoming defender would surely be expected to play second fiddle to Harry Maguire and Varane, who are assumed to become Manchester United’s first-choice pairing. This would rule out Pau Torres, who United have been linked with previously.

Who could Manchester United lure to Old Trafford?
