Mariners bring in Serbian playmaker

Serbian midfielder Milan Duric has become Central Coast's 10th off-season signing, after opting to play outside Europe for the first time.

The 31-year-old playmaker was spotted by Mariners coach Alen Stajcic during a scouting mission in Serbia, and the club have signed him on a one-season deal.

Duric most recently played in Serbia with FK Vojvodina, and has previously plied his trade in Macedonia, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Azerbaijan.

Stajcic said of him: "Milan has years of experience playing in the Serbian top league and throughout Europe. He is a natural leader and captained Vojvodina last season, one of the bigger clubs of Serbian football.

"This signing is another example of bringing a strong core of experience and leadership to the club and Milan is a role model that our younger players will learn from.

"After watching him play in Serbia and having the chance to meet with him, it was clear that he was a player that could come to the A-League and make an impact."

The Belgrade-born playmaker was named Serbian First League's player of the year in 2012, having helped Metalurg Skopje win the Macedonian Cup the previous year.

Duric said of his move: "The opportunity to play in Australia is something that I am really looking forward to; the hard work starts now and I cannot wait to play my first game here with the Mariners.

"My goal is to earn the respect of the coach, players, club and of course, the fans."

He is the third overseas player to join the Gosford club ahead of the A-League season, following Scottish defender Ziggy Gordon and South Korean midfielder Kim Eun-Sun.

Central Coast are 33/1 to win the A-League Grand Final. The Mariners are 8/1 to win the FFA Cup.
