Milan 'on alert as Arsenal make Maitland-Niles available for transfer'

AC Milan are reportedly keeping tabs on Arsenal star Ainsley-Maitland Niles - with the 22-year-old facing an uncertain future at the Emirates.

The Serie A giants were previously linked with the full back, who is believed to be viewed as an alternative to Davide Calabria, earlier this year and may swoop this summer.

According to Football Italia, Milan could be tempted into a move due to Mikel Arteta now not considering Maitland-Niles as part of his first-team plans.

The versatile youngster is also capable of being fielded in an advanced midfield role, and progressed through the Arsenal youth academy.

Despite making 24 appearances for the club across all levels this season, Maitland-Niles has fallen down the pecking order and could be shipped out to raise funds for the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal are thought to be hoping to fund a squad overhaul, with the majority of their budget likely to have to come from player sales - and Maitland-Niles, whose contract expires in 2023, may be one of the first to leave.

The financial uncertainty posed by the current health crisis may mean that Arsenal have to raise funds before splashing the cash on targets.

Having made his debut in 2014, Maitland-Niles has made 91 appearances in total for the North London outfit.

However, he has largely been forced to settle for a spot on the sidelines despite featuring regularly under Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery.

Maitland-Niles started in the first five games of Arteta's tenure, but was benched for the clash against Chelsea in January.

The starlet has not featured in a matchday squad since.

The Sun believe that Arteta has been irked by Maitland-Niles' poor punctuality, with the player having reported late to training on a number of occasions.

And with Calum Chambers, Hector Bellerin and Cedric Soares all battling to become first-choice right back, Maitland-Niles' future at the club appears uncertain.

Arsenal sat ninth in the Premier League table before the coronavirus crisis brought the season to an early halt in March, having won just nine of their 28 games.
