A mini durbar will be held in Accra to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the May 9th stadium disaster on Wednesday.

Over 126 soccer fans lost their lives in a stampede which occurred when Hearts of Oak clashed with Kotoko in 2001 at the Accra Sports stadium.

Past and present officials of both clubs including ex-Asante Kotoko chief Herbert Mensah and National Chief Imam Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu alongside Hearts Chief Executive Fred Crentsil will converge at the Nima Mosque where a prayer session will be held for the departed souls.

Officials and fans will then proceed to the venue where Africa’s worst soccer disaster occurred to pay their last respect to the fans who lost their lives.

Kotoko fans threw plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch after Hearts struck late to beat them 2-1 in a Ghana Premier League game.

Police fired into the crowd which caused panic and resulted in a stampede which saw over 126 passionate soccer fans perish.

Meanwhile the country’s national Under-20 and 17 teams will play an exhibition game at the national stadium to commemorate the event.
