Nyantakyi removal hopes dashed as clubs endorse Glo deal

Ghanaian clubs have fully expressed their satisfaction over the league’s sponsorship by Glo, severely denting hopes of removing Kwasi Nyantakyi as the president of the Ghana FA over the issue.

The issue erupted after some clubs reported that the US$15m sponsorship package was shrouded in secrecy as they were not told details of the deal including a 10 per cent commission paid to the agents who brokered the deal.

Government elements including spokesman Koku Anyidoho, who were already keen ousting Nyantakyi, jumped on the bandwagon by calling for an investigation into the deal with the Nigerian telecommunication giants.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) waded in the issue claiming there were corrupt practices in over the agency that brokered the deal for the GFA.

But a meeting called by the country’s top-flight clubs on Monday to scrutinize the agreement rather cleared the beleaguered GFA boss saying they are satisfied with how the deal and how it was brokered.

Their endorsement is a humiliating snub to the government elements who were keen on removing Nyantakyi from his position.

“The clubs met yesterday and for the first time we saw the agreement with Glo and scrutinized it,” Desmond Frimpong Manso, the CEO of Heart of Lions said.

“We are now satisfied with all the terms of the contract and how the deal was brokered. The clubs are now happy and we have no issues again.”

But the issue of the 10 per cent paid to the agent Mid Sea still hangs as a board member of the company Prof. Ewurama Addy claims the firm has not received the cash paid.

This runs contrary to the statement by several members of the firm including their lawyer who says they acted on the company’s behalf and have received the initial payment.

But the GFA is expected to steer clear of the company’s public disagreement by saying that it is an internal problem which they should not be drawn in.

Meanwhile, the 16 premier league clubs are expected to receive US$500,000 on Tuesday as an installment of the payment of their sponsorship deal.
