OTD in 1996, Atletico Madrid won La Liga and Copa del Rey

May 25 marks the 24th anniversary of the Atletico Madrid side that won the double under Radomir Antic in 95/96.

It was the first time Atletico had won the LaLiga Santander in 19 years - an entire generation had passed by that point.

What makes the achievement all the more amazing is that for the previous two seasons Atletico had been dangerously close to getting relegated.

On April 10, 1996, they defeated Barcelona 1-0 at La Romareda to take home the Copa del Rey.

Six weeks later Atletico beat Albacete 2-0 to see off their rivals and win the LaLiga Santander.

Antic had knack of getting the best out of players who were seen as being beyond their best years.

In addition to this he made shrewd signings, none more so than Milinko Pantic. The midfielder's precise free-kicks were vital to Atletico's success in 1995/96.

But there was so much more to that side. Two extraordinary full-backs in Delfi Geli and Toni who offered so much in attack, a couple of unsurpassable centre-backs in Santi and Roberto Solazabal added to the balance given by Juan Vizcaino and Diego Simeone's fight in midfield.

Up front, Luboslav Penev was a killer as he scored 22 goals in the 44 games he played.

In 1996/97, they were the only side in the competition that defeated eventual Champions League winners Borussia Dortmund.

Atletico were knocked out of the 1996/97 Champions League by Ajax in the quarter-finals.

That trophy would surely have seen the 'double' winners go on to be the best side in Atletico Madrid's history.
