PLAYER RATINGS: Marcus Rashford was unstoppable for Manchester United by Rhys Williams struggled

Published on: 24 January 2021

Manchester United edged beyond arch rivals Liverpool to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup after a classic encounter at Old Trafford.

Mohamed Salah netted twice for the strugglers but, with the clash ebbing freely from end to end, the hosts responded through goals from two academy products and their talisman.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford slotted home fine finishes - and a late free kick from Bruno Fernandes sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men through.

Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER ran the rule over both sets of players...

MANCHESTER UTD (4-2-3-1)

DEAN HENDERSON - 6.5

His second-half saves from Alexander-Arnold and Salah proved crucial in the end

AARON WAN-BISSAKA - 7

Did well to counter Liverpool threat on left and got even better as the game went on

VICTOR LINDELOF - 6

Caught out by Firmino’s pass for first goal, but did very little wrong after that

HARRY MAGUIRE - 6.5

Clattered by Milner early on but a steady presence for his team at the back

LUKE SHAW - 6.5

Very good going forward again but couldn’t keep Salah under wraps this time

SCOTT MCTOMINAY - 6.5

Could have been tighter on Firmino for first goal but good performance overall

PAUL POGBA - 7

Another strong showing from the Frenchman at both ends. Unlucky not to score again.

MASON GREENWOOD - 7

Showed his clinical finishing again and set up United’s second as well. Excellent.

DONNY VAN DER BEEK - 6

Tried to make the most of a rare opportunity but the game passed him by a little.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 8

Liverpool couldn’t handle him. Fantastic pass for first goal and composed finish for second

EDINSON CAVANI - 7

Led the line well and hit the bar but poor pass was intercepted for Liverpool’s equaliser

Subs: De Gea, Mata, Martial (for Rashford 86), Fred (for Greenwood 66, 6.5), Fernandes (for Van der Beek 66, 7.5), James, Telles, Matic, Tuanzebe

Scorers: Greenwood 26, Rashford 48, Fernandes 78

Booked: Lindelof, Pogba

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 7

More positive approach than at Anfield a week ago and it paid off with a hard-earned win

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3)

ALISSON - 6

Left exposed for the first two goals and had little chance with the winner from Fernandes

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD - 6

Got caught high up the pitch too often, leaving United to exploit the space behind

RHYS WILLIAMS - 5.5

Teenager struggled against Rashford and missed Greenwood’s pass for the second goal

FABINHO - 6.5

Composed performance again but gave away needless foul that led to the winner

ANDREW ROBERTSON - 7

Got forward very well but that also meant he lost track of Greenwood a few times

GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM - 6

Did his job to allow Liverpool to win control of midfield battle

JAMES MILNER - 7

Physical presence and made up for a glaring miss with clever dummy to set up equaliser

THIAGO - 6.5

Set the tempo for Liverpool but could have done more in the wall to block Fernandes’s free-kick

MO SALAH - 7

Back in the goals. Wonderful dink to score the first and smart finish for the second.

ROBERTO FIRMINO - 7

Creative spark with some excellent assists, including for both goals.

CURTIS JONES - 6

Started well as Liverpool threatened down the left but faded a little

Subs: Kelleher, Mane (for Wijnaldum 62, 6), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Tsimikas, Shaqiri (for Thiago 81), Origi (for Firmino 81), Phillips, Williams

Scorer: Salah 18, 58

Booked: Fabinho, Mane

Manager: Jurgen Klopp - 6

Knew about the threat United posed on the counter-attack but didn’t do enough to guard against it

Referee: Craig Pawson - 7

Good advantage played for United’s equaliser and got the important calls right
