PREMIER - Chelsea edge past Southampton on penalties

Published on: 26 October 2021

Chelsea needed penalties to beat Premier League rivals Southampton in the EFL Cup for the second time this season.

On the stroke of half-time, Kai Havertz jumped highest to head in Hakim Ziyech's corner, giving the hosts the lead.

The Saints were level two minutes after the second period began, with Che Adams reacting first to tap home after Kepa had parried Kyle Walker-Peters' shot.

The clubs couldn't be separated after 90 minutes, therefore penalties were needed, with Southampton's 21-year-old midfielder Will Smallbone missing the deciding spot-kick.
