PREMIER - Second victory for Gerrard as Villa defeats Crystal Palace

In a battle of the English Premier League greats-turned-managers, Steven Gerrard triumphed over Patrick Vieira as Aston Villa won 2-1 at Crystal Palace on Saturday thanks to goals from Matt Targett and John McGinn.

For the first time in a competitive encounter, two of the best midfielders of their generation went head-to-head on the touchline, with Gerrard celebrating his second straight victory since leaving Rangers for Villa.

Villa took the lead in the 15th minute when Targett scored after a corner hit him at the back post, and McGinn sealed the win late on. In stoppage time, Marc Guehi scored a consolation goal for Crystal Palace.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Guehi tapped home from Kouyate's cross to give the home side hope, but Gerrard watched his team cling on for a second victory at Palace, where he had failed to win in his previous six appearances.
