PSG's nine goalkeepers: Who'll stay? Who'll go?

Published on: 16 July 2021

Paris Saint-Germain are delighted to have signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, especially after the Italian was named as the best player at Euro 2020. There was a great market opportunity for the French side, who now have one of the best young goalkeepers in the world to boost their options between the posts.

However, the Ligue 1 club already had eight other senior goalkeepers under contract. That's quite a problem as they must now move these players on and football clubs across the world know that PSG can't demand much.

Many of these goalkeepers had been out on loan last season, but have just returned. They're likely to depart again, while Keylor Navas' future is uncertain too following the arrival of a starting-calibre shot-stopper like Donnarumma.

Here, we take a look at the nine goalkeepers on PSG's books.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (aged 22)

Donnarumma is the newest arrival and the expected starter for next season. He could be PSG's man for the next few years, having just signed his five-year deal.

Keylor Navas (aged 34)

Last year's starter is now considering his options. Navas has three years left on his deal, so could stay to back up Donnarumma and to hope for some minutes as a starter. Otherwise, he may move on in search of another starting role.

Alphonse Areola (aged 28)

After a couple of years on loan, at Real Madrid and then Fulham, Areola is once again back in Paris wondering what he'll do for the coming season. Another loan could be an option.

Sergio Rico (aged 27)

Rico initially joined on loan from Sevilla and was then signed permanently by PSG in the summer of 2020, signing a four-year contract. Already, though, his time in the French capital might be up.

Marcin Bulka (aged 21)

The 21-year-old Polish goalkeeper had two loan spells last season, at Cartagena and then LB Chateauroux in Spain and France's second divisions. Another loan could be an option here.

Garissone Innocent (aged 21)

This PSG youth team graduate went on loan to Caen last season to earn some experience, yet he only enjoyed four appearances. As such, another loan is surely needed.

Alexandre Letellier (aged 30)

Letellier joined PSG last summer to be the third-choice goalkeeper. He performed that role, but never got a minute of action. With his contract up in 2022, a loan doesn't make sense and he could be sold or he could be kept to be the third-choice once again.

Lucas Lavallee (aged 18)

After emerging from the LOSC youth academy, Lavallee signed a three-year deal to join PSG this summer. He could play in PSG's youth sides to earn experience.

Denis Franchi (aged 18)

Franchi was signed as a minor by PSG in 2019, before penning a professional contract this past year. He made the first-team matchday squad on a few occasions last season and regularly trained with the first team.
