Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien says he's surprised by John Terry's transition from a player to a manager.

Terry, who is a former England captain, is now the assistant coach at Aston Villa after ending his football career.

“It’s a big surprise for me,” he told Independent, letting out a short chuckle again, “because if somebody asked me when I was a playing if Frank Lampard would be a manager I would say no, because he’s very quiet.

"He would say something if he needs to. But he would come in, train well, plays football, and just goes home. But I know he’s a very intelligent boy. So yeah it’s quite a big surprise for me, but he’s been really good.”

John Terry won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a Champions League title in his time at Stamford Bridge, becoming the club's most decorated player.

The centre-back also won five league cups and a Europa League in more than 700 appearances for Chelsea.
