Roberto Firmino becomes Liverpool's 'big cat' as huge Anfield claim made

Roberto Firmino has been hailed as Liverpool's "big cat" by Reds legend Graeme Souness - who believes Anfield has never seen anything like it has under Jurgen Klopp.

Firmino has long been a key player for the Reds and netted the winner in the FIFA Club World Cup final against Flamengo in Qatar back in December.

The Brazilian has formed a devastating strike partnership with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, with the trio scoring 209 goals between them since first being united in August 2017.

And Souness has given Firmino the highest praise while comparing him and his fellow forwards with some Liverpool legends.

"I love watching Roberto Firmino play," he said. "A couple of years ago, I likened him to Kenny Dalglish. He's like a big cat walking through the jungle waiting for an opportunity to do damage.

"His radar is on all the time and he's got a great football brain, whereas (Mohamed) Salah and Sadio Mane, they will catch your eye more because they are direct and they score more goals.

"They are a wonderful attacking unit, but it's so important to have a really good defence because you can't play super football in every single game you play.

"When it's not going well, you need to know that you won't be conceding goals. Then, if you're on the back foot but you don't concede, you know that at some point in the 90 minutes, one of your special players is going to create something for someone else or score himself.

"That's what we had with Ian Rush. We would be under the cosh, we would clear our lines and a couple of passes later Rushy would be on the end of something, putting the ball in the net, and we would nick the game."

Souness, speaking to Sky Sports, was part of the Liverpool side the swept all before them during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

But the former Reds captain and manager is adamant he hasn't seen an atmosphere similar to the one that has been rocking Anfield in recent years.

"The atmosphere has always been special at Anfield, but it's greater now," he added. "I was working on the Barcelona game last season and the atmosphere that night was extraordinary. It was coming out of the television screen.

"I think the players are enjoying an even better atmosphere now than when I was there for the simple reason that the club haven't been as successful. In the 70s and 80s, Liverpool were European champions, winning the league every other year. It was the norm.

"But it's gone to a different level now because the supporters haven't won the league for 30 years. They are desperate to feel that success again.

"When I go there now working for Sky, I just love it. The sound of You'll Never Walk Alone, the football that's being played, the joy the team is bringing to those supporters. It's amazing."
