Roma coach predicts limited role for Totti

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has cast doubts over Francesco Totti’s predicted return to action against Real Madrid.

The Giallorossi have begun to turn their season around by winning their last four matches, placing them fourth in the league; however as they prepare to face Real Madrid in their upcoming Champions League clash, Spalletti insists the club must enter into the fixture with their best available options.

“I am the coach of Roma, not Totti,” Spalletti stated in a long interview with AS.

“My primary objective is to get results, and to do that, I must make decisions based on current performance, not a player’s history.

“I believe Totti and I have a fine relationship, but you’d have to ask him for his point-of-view.

“Of course he is a player who can make things happen while on attack, but his qualities also depend on our opponents as well.

“He can create the perfect pass, but it’s hard for him to then sprint back 40 meters if the team is pressed.

“Right now, Roma cannot base itself on the legacy of one player.

“The only way to lift the team is to start thinking differently, there is no room for feelings, only work, strength, and the game.

“I have tremendous respect for Totti, his qualities, and his legacy at the club, but I have to do my job, and focus on results.”
