Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expected to sign for Lazio as a free agent

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expected to sign for Lazio as a free agent after his Arsenal contract was terminated.

The defender had also been linked with a return to his old club Genoa, but the Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia now claim Lazio have secured a deal.

The Greek international had six months left on his Arsenal contract, but rather than negotiate a transfer fee, the Gunners decided it was better to simply terminate it early by mutual consent and allow him to find his next club.

The Gazzetta report suggests Sokratis is seeking €2m per season until June 2022.

Genoa had been very interested, but Lazio are in the Champions League Round of 16 and need a new centre-back after Luiz Felipe had ankle surgery this week.
