This Sunday Setien will play his first match as coach of Barcelona.
Quique Setién will debut on the bench of Barça this Sunday at 21.00h in front of Granada at Camp Nou. The Cantabrian coach arrives in Barcelona after the club decided to terminate Ernesto Valverde's contract. According to President Bartomeu, “the team needed a boost for the second half of the season.”
Setién arrives after being half-season without a team but leaving very positive sensations in the outfits he has gone through. In MD we review the Spanish premieres in his different stages as a coach.
1) Real Betis: Barca bitter the green-white debut
20 August 2017: Barca 2-0 Betis
In the first matchday of the 2017/18 La Liga, Betis visited Camp Nou. Ernesto Valverde played his first league match on the Barca bench. The Blaugranas won 2-0 and made Setien bitter in the Sevillian team's debut.
2) UD Las Palmas: Premiere in First Division
25 October 2015: Las Palmas 0-0 Villarreal
Setién takes the reins of the Canary club when he was in relegation positions with the mission of maintaining the category. With the arrival of the Cantabrian, the game of Las Palmas improves and they manage to stay in Primera for another year. This match meant Setién's debut in the top category and served for the team to raise its head again.
3) CD Lugo: Back to professional football
18 August 2012: CD Lugo 1-0 Hercules
After a few years in Second Division B with Poli Ejido, Logroñés and Lugo himself it was time to return to the silver division. With the promotion achieved, Setién stayed with the Galician team and began the search for permanence with a minimum victory against Hercules. The team managed to avoid the descent.
4) Racing de Santander: Managerial debut on the benches
7 October 2001: Racing Ferrol 2 - 0 Racing de Santander
In his first stage as a coach, he had a totally unexpected success. The Cantabrian sat on the bench of Racing when he was in relegation positions with seven games played and managed to finish the season by climbing the team to Primera División. But his first match ended with a loss against Racing de Ferrol.
